The old rule of thumb for calcium/magnesium supplements was a 2:1 ratio, however, Wise Women's Cal/Mag has a 1:1 ratio based on new evidence.

Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, a magnesium expert and medical director of the nonprofit Nutritional Magnesium Association, strongly suggests that it's time to change.

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) data suggests that taking calcium supplements may raise heart disease risk for post-menopausal women. This is why it's so important to balance magnesium and calcium 1:1. When taken 1:1, adequate levels of magnesium help with the absorption and metabolism of calcium and vitamin D.

"If we consume too much calcium without sufficient magnesium," says Dr. Dean, "not only will we create stress within the body, but the excess calcium won't be utilized correctly and may become toxic. Magnesium keeps calcium dissolved in the blood. Too much calcium and too little magnesium can cause some forms of arthritis, kidney stones, osteoporosis and calcification of the arteries, leading to heart attack and cardiovascular disease.

85% of the population is deficient in magnesium. Heart health, muscle function, constipation, diabetes, migraines, pain, anxiety, depression and more are all associated with magnesium deficiency.
